How to mix clean and punchy 808s with Waves Audio plugins - Dylan Droll

There’s nothing worse than a muddy 808 that gets lost in the mix — or worse, one that hits so hard it swallows your vocals. If you’ve ever struggled to get your 808s sounding tight, clean, and punchy, I’ve been there. The good news? You don’t need a million plugins — just the right ones.

In this guide, I’ll break down exactly how I mix 808s using Waves plugins inside Pro Tools. These are the same techniques I used on tracks like “All Away”, where the 808 had to knock but still leave space for emotion in the vocals.

Step 1: Start with a Good Sound

Before you even touch EQ or compression, make sure your 808 is hitting on its own. Pick a clean sample or bounce out your bass MIDI from a solid VST. The cleaner the source, the less processing you’ll need.

Step 2: Waves SSL-E Channel for EQ + Basic Shaping

I usually start with the Waves SSL E-Channel to clean up unwanted frequencies. Here’s how:

  • High-pass filter around 20Hz to cut sub-rumble
  • Low-mid dip around 250–500Hz to reduce mud
  • Optional high shelf around 5–8kHz if it has top-end noise

Step 3: Waves RBass to Add Low-End Energy

If your 808 feels weak on phones or small speakers, RBass is the cheat code. It adds subharmonics that create the illusion of bass on low-end-limited systems.

Set the frequency around 60Hz, dial in the intensity until it lifts the 808 without distorting.

Step 4: Waves Vitamin for Harmonic Excitement

Vitamin works like a multiband enhancer. I’ll use it to bring out punch in the mid-lows and presence in the low-mids.

  • Boost the low and low-mid bands slightly
  • Leave the top bands alone so you don’t mess with vocal clarity

Step 5: C4 Multiband Compression (If Needed)

If your 808 is clashing with the kick or fluctuating too much, throw on Waves C4. It lets you compress only the parts of the frequency spectrum that are out of control.

I usually tame the low-mids and let the deep lows hit clean and unrestricted.

Step 6: Sidechain If Your Kick Is Getting Lost

Sidechaining isn’t always necessary in melodic rap, but if your 808 and kick are clashing, sidechain your 808 to duck slightly when the kick hits. Use a fast attack and release so it breathes naturally.

808 Mixing Example: “All Away” by Dylan Droll

When I was working on “All Away”, I wanted the 808 to feel heavy but not overwhelm the sadness in the vocals. I ended up using:

  • SSL-E Channel to clean it up
  • RBass to fill in the low-end
  • Vitamin to give it character

It made the 808 feel emotional without being aggressive — like a heartbeat under the pain.
