How to Tell If Your Song Is Ready for Mixing or Mastering (2026 Checklist)

How to Tell If Your Song Is Ready for Mixing or Mastering (2026 Checklist)

How to Tell If Your Song Is Ready for Mixing or Mastering

One of the biggest mistakes artists make — especially independent artists recording from home — is sending a song to be mixed or mastered before it’s actually ready.

When your song isn’t ready, the mix suffers. The master suffers. The emotion of the performance suffers. And you end up spending more money, more time, and more energy trying to fix problems that should’ve been handled earlier.

As an artist and engineer myself, I’ve developed a simple checklist to know exactly when a track is ready for mixing or mastering. I use this same process for my own music, including my latest single “HWY”.

Why It’s Important to Know If Your Song Is Ready

Mixing and mastering can’t fix everything. They can:

  • Polish your sound
  • Balance your recording
  • Add loudness, clarity, and warmth

But they cannot replace a weak performance, poor recording quality, or missing arrangement pieces.

This checklist will help you avoid all of that and make sure your track is in the best possible shape before it reaches the mixing or mastering stage.

✔️ Step 1 — Are the Vocals Actually Finished?

Before mixing starts, ask yourself:

  • Is the emotion right?
  • Is the delivery how you want it?
  • Is the tone consistent?

You’d be surprised how much a “good mix” is really just a good vocal performance.

Tip: If you aren’t sure, record one more take. The best take always comes after the one you almost didn’t record.

✔️ Step 2 — Are All Vocal Layers Completed?

Before a mix begins, make sure all vocal elements are recorded and labeled:

  • Main vocals
  • Stacks / doubles
  • Harmonies
  • Ad-libs
  • Breaths (if intentional)

Missing layers lead to thin mixes. Overdone layers lead to muddy mixes. Balance is everything.

✔️ Step 3 — Is the Recording Clean?

You cannot fix a bad recording with mixing. Check for:

  • Clicks or pops
  • Room noise
  • Background hum
  • Distorted vocals

Make sure your gain staging is correct. Keep raw vocals around -12 to -18 dB before adding any plugins.

✔️ Step 4 — Is the Arrangement Final?

Don’t send a song for mixing if you still plan to:

  • Add another verse
  • Rewrite lyrics
  • Change the hook melody
  • Cut or extend sections
  • Swap beats / stems

Mixing a song that isn’t done yet is like painting a house that’s still being built.

✔️ Step 5 — Do You Have the Correct Files Ready?

Before mixing or mastering, make sure you export:

For mixing:

  • All raw vocal stems (no effects)
  • Beat stems (if available)
  • BPM, key, and song notes

For mastering:

  • Final mixed WAV file
  • Peaks around -3 to -6 dB
  • No limiter on the master bus

Tip: Never master an MP3 unless you absolutely have to.

✔️ Step 6 — Are You Happy With the Rough Mix?

A rough mix doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to communicate the vibe.

Before sending to mixing or mastering, ask yourself:

  • Does the song feel good?
  • Does the emotion translate?
  • Can you play it loud and soft and still feel something?

If your rough mix feels good, the final mix will feel great.

✔️ Step 7 — Does Your Song Have a Clear Vocal Tone?

Even before mixing, you should have a general tone direction:

  • Bright?
  • Warm?
  • Aggressive?
  • Spacey?
  • Emotional?

Knowing the direction helps your engineer make the right decisions. Even something simple like:

“I want this to sound like a mix of Juice WRLD and The Kid LAROI with emotional dynamics like Dylan Droll.”

That one sentence changes everything.

✔️ Step 8 — Do You Have Mastering Goals?

Mastering isn’t just “making it loud.” It's about matching:

  • Your genre
  • Your vibe
  • Your emotion

For streaming, I typically use the Waves L4 Ultramaximizer for loud, clean, modern masters:
