How to Promote a Song in 2025 Without a Budget

How to Promote a Song in 2025 Without a Budget

By an independent artist, Dylan Droll.

Promoting music in 2025 doesn’t mean you need thousands of dollars — but you do need a plan, patience, and some consistency. I just dropped a song called Figure You Out and I’m using nothing but free platforms, content, and my own energy to get it moving. This article breaks down exactly what I’m doing so you can try it too — without spending a dime.

💡 1. Use the “Should I Drop This?” Strategy Before Release

Before I even announced the title, I posted a short clip of the hook with the text:
“Should I drop this next?”

That one post opened the door for:

  • Organic engagement (“Yes! Drop it!”)
  • Easy reposts/shares
  • Curiosity without giving everything away

What you can do:
Make a clip with your best hook or line. Add simple on-screen text. Post it on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts at the same time. Ask the question — don’t give the answer.

🔗 2. Create a Free Smart Link (I Use DistroKid’s HyperFollow)

I built a free pre-save link using DistroKid’s HyperFollow. You can also use Feature.fm, Koji, or Linkfire.
I recommend creating your own page on your website too, like I did here:

👉 dylandroll.com/figureyouout-listen-now

Why it works:

  • All your links in one place
  • SEO-friendly (if hosted on your own site)
  • You can promote it everywhere without needing a new link for every platform

📬 3. Use Your Mailing List, Discord & Broadcast Channel

I sent a message to my email list that included:

  • A link to stream All Away
  • A few new blog posts I wrote
  • A CTA to pre-save Figure You Out

On top of that, I posted short updates to my:

  • Discord server
  • Instagram Broadcast Channel

Pro Tip:
Use these channels early and often, even if only a few people are in them. Don’t wait until you “go viral” — build the base now.

🧠 4. Create Simple, Honest Content

For this release, I focused on content that felt natural:

  • Studio clips
  • Text-on-screen with lyrics
  • “POV” videos
  • Talking directly to the camera

You don’t need crazy editing. Just be real. Especially if your music is emotional or personal like mine.

📈 5. Keep Pushing Even After the Release

The real work starts once the song is live.
Now that Figure You Out is out, I’m doing things like:

  • Making new clips from different parts of the song
  • Posting stories with quotes from the lyrics
  • Dropping behind-the-song blog articles like this one

Don’t be scared to keep promoting.
If you’re tired of hearing it, your audience is just starting to notice it.

✅ Final Advice

If you’re an artist trying to move without a budget in 2025:

  • Stay consistent, not perfect
  • Keep building a home base (mailing list, Discord, website)
  • Create real content from the heart
  • Don't wait for labels, blogs, or big co-signs — post it yourself

Start small, but keep going.
